Kreta, 1948: Überlebende der Shoah sind immer noch in Sammellager eingesperrt und warten auf ihre Ausreise nach Palästina. Die britische Mandatsregierung will jedoch keine weitere Einreise erlauben. Ari, ein Untergrundkämpfer der jüdischen Hagganah, bringt 600 Menschen auf ein Schiff und will die Einreise erzwingen. Das Schiff wird „Exodus“ genannt. Die Reise wird zum Symbol für die leidvolle Geschichte des jüdischen Volkes. Ari setzt in der Irrfahrt das Leben der Passagiere aufs Spiel, erreicht aber schließlich die Einreise ins gelobte Land. Doch die Leiden der Neuankömmlinge haben kein Ende.

Otto Preminger schuf ein 208-minütiges Epos basierend auf der Vorlage von Leon Uris. Mit Paul Newman konnte er einen der ganz großen Hollywoodstars für die Rolle des starken, stolzen Sabre Ari gewinnen. Der Film wirkt etwas langatmig, da Preminger Stoff für zwei oder mehr Filme verarbeitete. Dennoch ist „Exodus“ ein wichtiges filmisches Dokument über die Gründung des Staates Israel und über die Frage, ob es jemals Gerechtigkeit für das jüdische Volk geben wird. - Eine Frage, die noch heute aktuell ist.

Crete, 1948: survivors of the Shoah are still imprisoned in assembly camps and wait for their departure to Palestine. The British mandate government does not allow further entries. Ari, an underground fighter of the Jewish Hagganah, takes 600 persons to a ship and wants to enforce the entry. The ship is called „Exodus“. The voyage becomes a symbol for the painful history of the Jewish people. Ari stakes the lives of the passengers, but finally manages the entry into the Holy Land. Still the suffering of the new arrivals is not over.

Otto Preminger created a 208 minute epic based on Leon Uris’ reports. With Paul Newman, he got one of Hollywood’s greatest stars for the part of Ari, the strong, proud sabre. The film is a little long-winded because Preminger combined the plot of two or more films. Even though, „Exodus“ is an important film document about the foundation of the state of Israel and about the question, whether there is going to be justice for the Jewish people one day. - A question which is still up-to-date.
