König Artus, der durch die Kraft des magischen Schwerts Excalibur König von England wurde, wählte die edelsten Ritter des Landes aus, die auf seinem Schloß Camelot die legendäre Tafelrunde bilden. Der Mutigste und Ehrenwerteste der Edelmänner ist Sir Lancelot du Lac, Artus’ bester Freund. Lancelot ist seinem König bedingungslos ergeben - doch heimlich liebt er die Königin Guinevra, die seine Gefühle erwidert. Der Konflikt zwischen Freundschaft und Liebe quält Sir Lancelot. Er kann sich nicht zwischen Loyalität und Leidenschaft entscheiden und verliert deshalb beides. Artus verbannt den Freund aus Camelot und verstößt Guinevra.

„Die Ritter der Tafelrunde“ ist ein aufwendiges Spektakel in Technicolor. Die Artussage wurde stark verkürzt. Es wurde auf viele faszinierende Charaktere verzichtet und letztlich auf den romantischsten Teil der Erzählung, auf die Geschichte der schillernden Figur des Lancelot, reduziert. Schon allein die Besetzung macht den Konflikt deutlich: es ist durchaus nachvollziehbar, daß Ava Gardners glamouröse Guinevra sich mehr zu Robert Taylors galantem Lancelot hingezogen fühlt als zu Mel Ferrers hölzernem Artus.

„Die Ritter der Tafelrunde“ sind pathetisch, ein bißchen altmodisch, aber auf die eine oder andere Art immer wieder aktuell. Der Film entführt einem für einen Nachmittag in die Kindheit, in eine Zeit, in der man noch an Ritter glauben konnte und in der Lancelots Pferd am interessantesten schien.

The Knights of the Round Table

Arthur who became king of England thanks to the power of the magical sword Excalibur gathers the country’s noblest knights around him in the legendary round table. The most courageous and honourable of the noblemen is Sir Lancelot du Lac, Arthur’s best friend. Lancelot is completely devoted to his king - but secretly he loves the queen Guinevere who shares his feelings. The conflict between friendship and love tortures Lancelot. He hesitates between loyalty and passion and therefore looses both. Lancelot is banished from Camelot and Guinevere is abandoned.

„The Knights of the Round Table“ is a large-scale Technicolor spectacle. The saga around king Arthur was extremely shortened. Lots of fascinating characters were left out. Eventually, the plot was reduced to the most romantic part, the story of the dazzling Sir Lancelot du Lac.The cast already emphasises the conflict: it is quite understandable that Ava Gardner’s glamorous Guinevere is more drawn to Robert Taylor’s gallant Lancelot than to Mel Ferrer’s wooden Arthur.

„The Knights of the Round Table“ are pathetic, a little old-fashioned, but still present-day in one way or the other. The film allows a return to childhood dreams - to a time when you could believe in knights and when you thought Lancelot’s horse was the most interesting thing about the story.
